The Impact of Mobile Devices in Support Care for Cancer Patients

ON APRIL 4 AN INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE AT BOCCONI ORGANIZED BY SDA AND CERGAS BOCCONI, IN COLLABORATION WITH HELSINN, WILL EXPLORE THE ROLE AND IMPACT OF MOBILE TECHNOLOGY IN IMPROVING THE QUALITY AND EXPERIENCE OF CARE FOR ONCOLOGICAL PATIENTS. AN AWARD OF €50,000 WILL BE OFFERED FOR THE APP BEST ABLE TO IMPROVE PATIENTS' QUALITY OF LIFE

Mobile technologies represent the new frontier in cancer supportive care and the analysis of their role and contribution in the clinical and organizational management of patients will be the theme of the international conference which will be held in Bocconi on April 4. The conference ‘mhealth - Enhancing cancer support care’ organized by SDA Bocconi and Cergas Bocconi, in collaboration with Helsinn, will see the presence of researchers, academics and healthcare professionals to discuss how mobile technology is transforming cancer supportive care (CSC) delivery research, business and policy.

“Cancer disease management represents one of the greatest healthcare challenges worldwide and mhealth - health practice supported by mobile devices, such as mobile phones, patient monitoring devices and other wireless devices – represents a new frontier in delivering oncological care,” explains Greta Nasi, Director of the Public Management & Policy Area at SDA Bocconi. “These technologies, by allowing remote monitoring, encourage patients to live at home and thus improving their quality of life. They also enhance collaboration and information sharing among clinicians, who have better communication with patients, and the timely detection of severe symptoms, avoiding complications and preventing readmissions to hospital.”

During the conference discussion will involve the role and future prospects of these technologies, the implications for healthcare policy and practice, the best practices and the viewpoints of different stakeholders, such as clinicians, policy makers, IT professionals and patients.

“The use of mobile health is not so widespread yet in cancer supportive care. This conference will be an occasion to create networking and interaction among the players and stakeholders of the sector and can be the starting point for more detailed studies on the economic impact of these technologies and how they can transform the pathway of care,” explains Rosanna Tarricone, Director of Cergas Bocconi, Centre for Research on Health and Social Care Management.

The conference will see the participation of, among others, Gunther Eysenbach, editor-in-chief Journal of Medical Internet Research, Clifford Hudis, president American Society of Clinical Oncology, Paola Testori Coggi, director general DG SANCO of the European Commission, Xiaoling Qin, deputy director-general China State Food & Drug Administration, Alberto Costa, scientific director European School of Oncology e Najeeb Al Shorbaji, director Department of Knowledge Management and Sharing, WHO.

“The support of Helsinn for this conference confirms our commitment in consolidating our leadership as innovators in the field of supportive care for cancer patients – with particular attention to improving the quality of life of all those that have to deal with this illness,” says Riccardo Braglia, CEO of Helsinn.

During the conference will also be launched an App Award, sponsored by Helsinn Group, which aims to reward, with 50,000 euro, the best new mobile application able to improve the quality of life of cancer patients.
