The Art of Managing the Arts

The Art of Managing the Arts

A NEW MASTER IN ARTS MANAGEMENT AND ADMINISTRATION FROM SDA BOCCONI IN MILAN TO DEVELOP THE MANAGERIAL EXPERTISE OF THOSE WHO WORK IN THE ARTS AND CULTURE SECTOR. A PROGRAMME IN ENGLISH WITH PARTNERS SUCH AS THE PHILHARMONIC OF TEATRO ALLA SCALA, THE ARENA OF VERONA AND THE VATICAN MUSEUMS AND WHICH INCLUDES A GRAND TOUR OF ITALIAN ART CITIES

Promoting and pushing forward the arts and culture today is complex and requires professionals who have the right mix of specific managerial expertise and knowledge of the sector. To meet this need SDA Bocconi school of management in Milan is launching a new international masters program, the Master in Arts Management & Administration (MAMA), to develop and advance the managerial and leadership skills of those who work in the arts and culture sector (such as in museums, theatres or festivals) or as an entrepreneur in the field.

The program will launch in October 2015 and, thanks also to the collaboration with important partners and institutions such as the Philharmonic of Teatro alla Scala, the Arena of Verona and the Vatican Museums, in addition to traditional classroom lectures will also offer a rich structure of meetings, case analysis, company visits and field projects and the chance to interact with a network of professionals and top-tier managers from leading arts institutions across Europe.

This specialist international course, entirely in English, is aimed at participants aged 25-35 with degrees in the humanities who have some professional experience in the art world. The programme structure foresees a focus on aspects such as communication, marketing, creative entrepreneurship and fundraising and the development of all the skills necessary to help a cultural institution to prosper, balancing the need for artistic integrity with that of economic viability.

It will have a duration of 15 months full-time and applications are open until May 15. For information: www.sdabocconi.it/en/specialized-master-full-time-executive/mama

An integral part of the new program is the ‘Grand Tour’, a journey with stops in the major centers of Italian culture such as Venice, Florence, Rome, Naples, and of course Milan, to experience first-hand the excellence in cultural heritage and artistic production.

"To support artistic innovation, cultural development and the promotion of arts and culture," says Alex Turrini, MAMA Director, "is only possible if you are able to combine passion and respect for the arts with entrepreneurial and managerial skills. In particular, a sound knowledge of the artistic and cultural ‘product’ is fundamental together with the ability to attract the interest of the public and of financial backing.”
