Video/Faculty, funding and credibility; the effects on British universities after Brexit

AFTER BREXIT BRITISH UNIVERSITIES COULD NOW BE LESS APPEALING TO INTERNATIONAL FACULTY AND LOSE OUT ON IMPORTANT EUROPEAN RESEARCH FUNDING, SAYS ANDREA SIRONI, RECTOR OF BOCCONI UNIVERSITY, IN THE NEW EPISODE OF #EDUBLOG. AND THE FACT THAT THE UNITED VOICE OF BRITISH ECONOMISTS AND BUSINESS LEADERS IN FAVOR OF REMAIN WASN'T LISTENED TO OPENS UP A QUESTION OF CREDIBILITY OF ACADEMICS AND BUSINESS EXPERTS

Among the many implications of the outcome of the Brexit referendum are a series of possible repercussions which could affect British universities and business schools, related to faculty recruitment and retainment, access to research funding and credibility, says Andrea Sironi, Rector of Bocconi University, in the new episode of #EduBlog, the Bocconi video blog on topics of higher education and business education.

In the first place, says Sironi, British universities have always managed to attract top level academics and researchers from all over the world but the perception is that a number of faculty, especially European, could now no longer see Britain as a favorable environment for their careers. Connected to this is the fact that Britain based researchers will now lose access to important European research funding, such as the ERC grants, and this could also be an incentive for researchers to leave and relocate in continental Europe.

And lastly, suggests Sironi, the fact that all academics and economists came out strongly in favor of 'Remain' but were not listened by the British people raises important questions about their credibility.
