More than 100 Universities to Recruit European Economists in Naples

More than 100 Universities to Recruit European Economists in Naples

THE EUROPEAN ECONOMIC ASSOCIATION, ON DECEMBER 6 AND 7, WILL HOLD THE 1ST EDITION OF THE JOB MARKET FOR YOUNG ECONOMISTS SEARCHING FOR A JOB IN ACADEMIA, CENTRAL BANKS AND PRIVATE INSTITUTIONS

On December 6-7, Naples will host thousands of job interviews, as 100 universities, central banks and private institutions will recruit new hires among 600 of the most brilliant European young economists, following a model that has been working well for decades in the US. The European Economic Association, headed by Eliana La Ferrara, Invernizzi Chair in Development Economics at Bocconi University, has in fact organized the first edition of the European Job Market for economists. The Job Market will take place after the Econometric Society’s Winter Meeting, hosted by University of Naples Federico II, on December 4-5.

In the past months, a pre-selection process has taken place online and recruiters have now chosen whom to interview among the many candidates that contacted them. In Naples, teams of 4-6 recruiters per institution will conduct the interviews.

The majority of the recruiters are from European universities, but some come from as far afield as Australia, others from the Middle East. The PhD students and post-docs who will be coming to the city to be interviewed are mostly from European universities, bust also include finishing Ph.D. students from US universities.

«This event marks the inception of a yearly pan-European market where the demand and supply of young talent in economics will meet on a continental scale, as they do in the US, where a job market convenes every year in January», says Professor La Ferrara. «Up to now, only a few top-tier European universities and a small number of candidates have had the resources to participate in the American Job Market. By organizing a European Job Market we want to boost universities’ internationalization and improve the efficiency of the matches between institutions and candidates».

While the Winter Meeting of the Econometric Society will host parallel sessions on a wide range of economic topics, in the Job Market days the European Economic Society will host two special events: an educational workshop for the candidates on how to give professional presentations of their work and a keynote lecture by Professor Jean Tirole, past President of the European Economic Association and Nobel Laureate.

The Winter Meeting is sponsored by the Econometric Society, Banca d’Italia, the University of Naples Federico II, its Department of Economics and Statistics, and the Center for Studies in Economics and Finance. The Inaugural Job Market is sposored by UniCredit Foundation, Banca d’Italia and the European Central Bank.
